Posting the right type of content on Facebook is more than important – it’s CRUCIAL. When you are using Facebook, be it for business or personal purposes, you are competing with the other more than 2 billion active monthly users for space and attention in the newsfeed. There is every kind of content you can imagine flashing before your audience’s eyes, all with the sole intent to attract the users to their product, service, or cause. If you want to maximize your reach and grow the largest possible following, you will need to increase your engagement through comments, likes, and shares.

Identify your Target Audience

To get the best possible results on Facebook, you need to know your audience. You can say that your audience is Internet Marketers, but not all Internet Marketers need the same things. Of course there are some basics that apply to all Internet Marketers everywhere, but beyond those few things, there is a huge variance in the needs of individual marketers. For example, some Internet Marketers create their own products, some use PLR material. Some sell physical products, others sell only info products, and then some only sell affiliate products. This doesn’t even take into account the immense differences from niche to niche.

Since every marketer has different needs, even though they perform similar work, it is important to ask targeted and specific questions to really drill down to which specific subset of Internet Marketers that would be interested in what you have to offer. By asking these targeted questions, you will be able to create a spot on persona, bringing a member of your target audience to life. Defining the identity of your ideal audience member is going to make your marketing efforts much more effective and efficient, helping you to maximize your ROI (return on investment). The more that you know about your audience on Facebook the better results you can achieve.

Here are a few excellent questions that can help someone in the make money online niche to define and identify their target audience:

* What is their gender?
* What is their age range?
* Where are they located?
* What are their interests?
* What income levels do they have?

Obviously, this is only the tip of the iceberg, the short list, you could say. It wouldn’t take a lot of time or even a whole lot of thought to come up with more questions. You can also do a quick online search for resources on creating the ideal customer persona. Whatever you do, don’t rush through this. Take your time so you can get the most accurate results possible. Remember, this is crucial to the success of your campaign. It deserves your undivided time and attention. You want and need to get this right!

What Problems does your Audience have?

When you know what problems your audience faces, you can plan your Facebook content to strategically solve these problems, while funneling traffic to your websites at the same time. The content you post on Facebook should be a highlights reel of sorts – laying out the main benefits in Facebook, with a link to the full answer on your website. When this is done correctly, you boost your authority in your niche, and your audience esteems you as an expert. By highlighting the most important benefits on Facebook, and making it known that there is more of the good stuff at the other end of the link included, Facebook users are willingly going to click through to your site. Once they are on your website, and see the value that is provided there, they are going to spend some time there, checking out all you have to offer them. Just like before, you want to come up with a good list of questions to help you determine what problems need to be solved by your audience.

This is another homework assignment, and it is important for you to do a thorough and complete job of this. If you are in the make money online niche then think about the problems that people want to solve:

* How can they make more commissions?
* How can they get more traffic to their offers?
* How can they rank their website on Google?
* How can they achieve more conversions?
* What online business model should they use?
* Which web hosting is the best?
* How can they build a high converting sales funnel?

Every niche has it’s own unique set of problems. And the number of problems that are faced are plentiful enough to keep you busy for quite some time. If you find yourself stuck trying to determine what people in your niche are struggling with, join a few groups on Facebook and observe what people are asking most often. Once you know the questions, don’t just hammer out a paragraph or two that explains it and move on to the next problem or question. There is nothing wrong with posting an explanation, but not everyone can learn that way. So it is a good idea to answer that particular question in a few different ways. Host a Facebook live where you demonstrate “how to”, or try to make a game out of answers somehow – a scavenger hunt or something. When you can solve your audience’s problems in a way they understand, they will love you forever!!

What kind of Content does your Audience like the most?

After you have been using your Facebook business page for a while, you will be able to take advantage of Facebook Insights. This handy little tool can tell you which of your posts are more popular. You want to thoroughly examine these posts and try to determine what made them so popular with your audience.

Once you have perfected the secret sauce, you can serve it up in your future posts as well. I don’t mean post about the same topic all the time – you want to avoid boring your audience to death, or making them cringe when they hear the words “traffic generation” (or whatever other dead horse you kept beating). You want to try to keep their interest. To perfect the secret sauce, you really just need to know what format the winning posts are in, and any other particularly striking details, and then combine that formula with different content in future posts.

While you are building up your historical data that feeds the Facebook Insights machine, you can rely on trusty old Facebook groups. Think of the groups as your lab, utilize your observation skills, and take note of what types of posts perform well and the types of posts that flop. You can easily gauge this by the number of likes, comments, and shares the posts have. It doesn’t even have to be your posts. Learn from everyone there. After all, if you can’t learn from your peers, then you are hanging with the wrong crowd! You should always strive to be a student, even when you are the expert and the teacher. There is always something to learn.

Plan your Content

Be prepared – once your audience gets a taste of the secret sauce, they are going to get hungrier and hungrier for more. You didn’t come here to build up a following, just to let them down soon after. You also don’t want to put yourself under such heavy demand that you find yourself overwhelmed, stressed out and annoyed. You need to post on a regular basis though, so the key here is to plan your content. By taking an hour or two at the beginning of the week to set up all your content and schedule the posting, you free up the rest of your time for whatever is important to you.

Facebook has a native scheduler that is free to use with any Facebook business page. It is as easy as it can be, too. If you are using a mobile phone to create your posts, you will need to use the Facebook Pages Manager App. Once you create your post and tap on ‘Share”, you will have the option to ‘Share Now’ or ‘Schedule a Post’. Once you choose the option to schedule, it is very straightforward – choose the date and time you would like your post to publish to Facebook, then confirm by tapping the ‘Schedule Post’ button.

On a desktop or laptop, you will use the Publishing Tools link along the left menu, create your post on that page, choose if you want to publish to Facebook or Instagram or both, schedule your time, and then confirm it and post.

Either way, it’s free, and it’s there for you to use. You don’t have to use an expensive third party app unless you choose to.

How To Get Free Traffic From Facebook Groups

An excellent source for free traffic generation is Facebook groups. In my last post, I talked about your own Facebook group, but today I am talking about other Facebook groups, not your own. In order to successfully tap into this excellent traffic source, you have to know what to do and what not to do. It doesn’t matter what niche you’re in, you will find an abundance of Facebook groups related to it. You can grow your own audience just by participating in these groups.

Identify The Right Groups

It is really easy to find groups that are related to your niche. All you have to do is use Facebook’s search function. You’ll first need to identify some keywords that best describe your niche. (If you need a good keyword research tool, I gave one away in my last post).

Let’s stick with the weight loss niche as an example. Some really good keywords to search for relevant Facebook groups are –

* Weight loss
* Burn fat
* Diets
* Nutrition
* Exercise
* Diet programs

You can drill down even further into sub-niches, too. Being laser targeted to your specific area of business is never a bad idea. What this means is instead of just “weight loss”, you search for “weight loss for women”, “weight loss for men over 50”, or “losing belly fat”. Make sure you do your homework, and come up with as many keywords as you can.

Find Active Groups

You don’t want  to join a Facebook group where nobody is posting or commenting. Joining a dead group like that is a waste of your time. Remember, we are trying to generate free traffic from these Facebook groups, not just increase the number of groups we’re in. You want to find groups that are active, and that have a lot of members. You may have to apply to join some of these groups just to see what’s going on in them.

Try to find between 5 and 10 groups that seem good, and join them. Avoid open groups, as they are very prone to spam and trolls. Closed groups are best. Once you are a member, check the group out and see how active it is.

Make sure that you have read the group rules. Some groups do not allow external links. Make sure that you will not be breaking the rules by sharing a link to your website, or by direct messaging other members with information. You want to be respectful, and not do things to get kicked out of any groups. You want to have a good reputation.

Provide Value In The Beginning

Once you have found some good groups, you’ll want to start being active in them. That doesn’t mean you jump right in and start posting your promotional messages. This goes right back to maintaining a good reputation. If you join a group and immediately start promoting your products and your websites, you are going to be labeled a spammer and kicked out of those groups. Instead, start by making a post introducing yourself. Let people know who you are, where you’re from, a little bit about your journey, and what you stand for. You can mention what you do, and mention your website, but just generally. Say something like “You can see more of my story on my Facebook page”. This will leave people wanting to see what you have to say, and they will check your page out. Obviously, you will want to have your Facebook page set up and ready for visitors, with content that links to your website.

There is a very good chance that a good number of existing group members will comment on your post welcoming you to the group. Some may even message you directly and have a friendly conversation to get to know you a little better. Make sure that you thank each of these people for their warm welcome by replying to their comments, and have the conversations in messenger. It is important for you to interact and build relationships with the members of the groups you joined, so that when you do finally talk about your business directly, they don’t block you and go about their day.

Check For Promo Days

Even though some groups may not seem like it, every group was started by a person or group of people who had a specific purpose in mind for their members. Unless the group was formed for others to promote themselves and their businesses, chances are there are limits to promotional posting in the group. Most groups have certain promo days, where they allow members to post openly about their businesses and share links to their websites. Since you have joined 5-10 groups, it is a good idea to use a calendar or a spreadsheet to keep track of which days you can post promos in each group. This will help you avoid any confusion that could result in you getting kicked out of a group. If that happens, all of your groundwork was for nothing.

Repurpose Your Existing Content

We have all heard the expression “Work smarter, not harder”. The best example of this for any internet marketer is repurposing content. I am a huge fan of repurposing content, especially the really good stuff. I bring this up because obviously you are going to need to post in the groups you joined on non-promo days, and you want to make sure that you’re posting content that provides value. Not only that, but your posts should also help position you as an authority in the eyes of other members. By using content that you have already published on your website, you are going to appear to be an expert of sorts to other members, especially those who are not online marketers themselves.

When members see posts with information that is well-researched, accurate, and laid out intelligently, they are going to take notice. This is because a lot of Facebook users tend to lean heavily on slang terms and throw things like grammar and punctuation to the side. But there are always going to be people who are sticklers for good grammar, proper English, and the use of punctuation, and they are going to appreciate seeing someone who pays attention to those areas. Even the people who forego those things on Facebook are going to appreciate them when they see them. And it will strengthen your position as an authority in your niche. When people see content that looks professional, they are going to want to know more about you, and will click through to your Facebook page.

Remember, you need to get people to know, like, and trust you. You also need to be seen as an authority in your niche. With just a little daily effort in a few Facebook groups, you will be well on your way to achieving these goals, and the free traffic will begin to flow. Then all you have to do is maintain the relationships you have already built, and rinse and repeat with a few new groups. Facebook groups are in endless supply, and so is the traffic you can get by utilizing them the right way.

A great way to generate free traffic from Facebook is by having your own Facebook group. When you have your own Facebook group, you are not only in control, but you also increase your authority and influence the members of the group. In order to keep your group members happy, you will need to set your group up the right way.

Choosing Your Group’s Privacy

When you begin setting up your group on Facebook, you will see that you have 3 privacy options available –

1. Open
2. Closed
3. Secret

If you choose to have an open group, anyone will be able to find your group, see who is in the group and what they post, and join your group without your approval. This offers no privacy or exclusivity to the members of your group, which could end up costing you a large number of members. While it may be easier for you to not have to approve every member coming into your group, having an open group leaves you vulnerable to spammers and trolls. And since anyone on Facebook is able to see what is posted in an open group, your members may not feel comfortable opening up. For these reasons, amongst others, an open group is not recommended.

If you choose to have your group set to Closed, only members of your group are able to see what has been posted inside the group. Facebook users can easily search for your group, but they cannot join without making a request that you will have to approve. Other Facebook users can see who is in your group, but they cannot see what has been posted, giving your members a sense of privacy and security. By choosing this setting, members can feel confident that what they discuss in the group cannot be viewed by the entire Facebook world.

While Secret is an option for your group, it is not recommended. Facebook users can’t find your group by searching. They can’t see who else has become a member, or what has been posted, either. If someone wanted to find your group, and doesn’t have a direct link to it, then you risk losing them as a member. They probably will not try more than one or two possible search phrases before they give up and move on to something else.

Setting Up Your Group

When you name your group, you’ll want to include at least one relevant keyword in the name. Try to use the best performing keyword you can find. If you need a good keyword research tool, you can find one here, my gift to you. Remember, users should be able to find your group by using search. That is why getting the right keyword is so important. Let’s say you’re in the weight loss niche. Your group name could be “The Weight Loss Winners Group” or something similar, since “weight loss” is the top performing keyword for the weight loss niche.

You can also add tags to your group. Tags will help identify your group in a search, so you will want to use other high performing keywords as your tags. Next, you want to add a cover photo that is very visually appealing, and add a caption with a strong message, like “Learn how to lose weight and keep it off!”

It is also a good idea to include a photo of yourself. Your ultimate goal is for your members to know, like, and trust you. This will be hard to achieve if you are just a name on a Facebook page. Including a picture of yourself with a warm smile that is professional, without making you appear uptight, you will appear more likeable, and increase your influence over your members.

For the group’s description, make sure that you highlight the benefits of being a member. This will help those who are checking your group out decide whether they want to join or not. Make sure this is accurate, as you don’t want your members to leave because they didn’t get what they were promised. Doing your best in writing the description will help you accrue the maximum amount of members.

Your Pinned Post

A “pinned post” is a post that stays at the top of the group at all times. This is the first post new members see as they join your group. This is a great place to welcome all of your members. You can also use this post to expand on what your group offers. Let your new group members know that the best content available for your niche will be found in your group.

It is a good idea to record a video on Facebook, and add it to your pinned post. The video can be simple, just you, talking about the advantages of being a member of your group, and the benefits that your members can expect to gain. Be confident, and let them know that you are comfortable around them.

Group Content

You want to always encourage your group members to actively post and comment inside the group. To make this as natural as possible, you will want to lead by example. Make sure that what you post is valuable, and that your members will gain some benefit from it. You don’t want to be the only person posting, though. If the group owner is the only one posting content, it just looks strange. So always encourage your members to participate. Let them know from the start that you look forward to learning from them, as much as you look forward to sharing your knowledge, as well.

A really good idea is to poll your members to find out what questions they have. You can do this in the questions you create for members who are asking to join, or even ask in the pinned post for new members to comment their top 3 questions about your niche. You can also make a post that is a poll with a couple frequently asked questions in your niche in general, and allow other users to add poll options with their own questions.

Knowing what questions your members have will allow you to curate content that is as beneficial as it can possibly be. You can give part of the answer in your group, and provide a link to the full answer on your website. You can also compile all of the questions and the answers to them into a Frequently Asked Questions file for your members, including the links to the full answers on your website. These FAQs can also be easily repurposed into a PDF that can be given away as a lead magnet, amongst other things.

There are a few mistakes that a lot of marketers make while marketing on Facebook. To drive the most FREE traffic possible, you will want to avoid these mistakes, which means you first need to know what they are. Most people jump right in on Facebook and just start advertising, ending up with little to no results, or, worse, with their accounts closed! Unless you want to start new Facebook accounts from scratch every couple of months, or just give up on free traffic from Facebook, you definitely need to play by their rules. While paid advertisements on Facebook are effective, and you can get results with as little as $5 a day, it is also nice to be able to drive free traffic from the platform. After all, everything is better when it’s free, right?

Facebook is NOT an Advertising Platform

Facebook is a social network, first and foremost. While there are advertisements being served, you definitely do NOT want to just jump right in and start advertising. This will be seen as spam and is a sure fire way to get your account closed with a quickness. If you are going to sell on Facebook, you’ll want to use the gentle art of persuasion to get users into your funnel. As always, you want to start by providing them something of value, for free, and once they have clicked through for that, then you can tell them about what you have to offer. You want it to be their choice that they are seeing your offer, not just on Facebook, but on any platform. You don’t want a negative Facebook experience being associated with you, or your brand.

Facebook is really cracking down on clickbait. Up until a few years ago, you could use clickbait posts to get a lot of views to your posts. Now, Facebook will remove the post, and possibly place restrictions on your ability to post. If you are using clickbait posts frequently, Facebook may even close your account. Clickbait is a post that deliberately misleads the reader, and very often is highly sensationalized, making it very tempting for people to click.

Most of us know the way it feels when you click a post that says “The Real Truth About Making Money Online” and then when you get to the site, you find out that it not only has nothing to do with making money online, but it also costs money to access the information. It’s a real mood killer, and a lot of us have unfollowed or even blocked people who post these things. At the very least, people will stop reading your posts, which is bad. That is exactly opposite the goal we are working towards, so you definitely want to avoid this altogether. Remember, we want our followers to come to know, like, and trust us.

The titles and descriptions of your posts should be accurate and truthful. The titles and description are there to help your followers decide whether they want to click through or not. This will be appreciated by your followers, and more importantly, Facebook will appreciate it. Avoiding misleading, exaggerated, and sensationalized headlines will help ensure that your posts continue being served to your audience, so they can decide of they would like to read them or not.

Facebook knows that users are going to leave their platform, but they don’t like it. If you just post a link with no explanation or other information, Facebook is most likely going to redirect the user back to Facebook. Do you think that they are going to wait forever for your page to load? In case there is any doubt, the answer is no, they will not. You MAY get one or two random people who will wait, but most people are going to click right back over to Facebook, and never visit your site again. If you are a WordPress user, there are many plugin options available for this, both free and paid. Even outside of WordPress, there are plenty of ways to optimize the speed of your website. A quick Google search can provide you with plenty of options, many for free.

You will also want to make sure that your site is optimized for mobile devices, since most Facebook users are visiting the platform using their mobile devices. People will be turned off from your website if it is not optimized for mobile users. There are many ways you can fix this. After applying any fixes to optimize your site for mobile users, you’ll want to test it using your phone, or use an online emulator. Again, WordPress users can find many free plugins for this, or paid, if that is what they’re after. For those not using WordPress, you can search through Google or any other search engine, and find the options available.

Knowing the things that will make Facebook mad at you is only half of the battle. You also need to avoid doing these things, to keep your Facebook account alive, and for Facebook to keep serving your posts to your audience. Organic reach is getting harder and harder for those of us doing business on Facebook, so it’s always a good idea to keep up with the changes to the platform, and make sure that you’re minding their rules. By doing so, you can continue to enjoy the free traffic from the platform.

The correct answer to this question is and always will be “whatever your audience wants”, but that would make this post super short, so I’m going to give you a few tips to help you out. The type of content that you post on Facebook definitely affects your engagement rates, and the traffic that you get from the platform.

Your Facebook Page

Before we get into the types of content that get the best results, let’s talk about your Facebook Page. Is this as attractive as it can possibly be for your audience? Answer this question by answering a couple other questions.  Is your cover photo relevant to your business or brand, and is it visually appealing? Is your intro captivating? Does it include a link back to your website (including the https://)?

Pay careful attention to your cover photo. If this is poor quality or looks like a 5 year old created it people are going to wonder what is going on (unless of course your business is fostering artistic tendencies in children, lol). If the main components of your Facebook page have visitors questioning whether you’re serious or a joke, you may as well not even bother with posting content, because any visitors to your page will quickly click right back out of it.

High Quality Images

Facebook is a lot like Instagram, in the sense that it is a very visual platform. People want to be be entertained, and they want to see images that are stunning and look well put together. Try to avoid using only stock images. Take pictures of yourself and the people who work with or for you (if there are any).

Adding captions to your images will help drive visitors to your websites. You can create gorgeous photos for your page without holding a PHD in Photoshop. You don’t have to use Photoshop at all. There are free online tools, like Canva, that are super simple to use, and will help you create perfect pictures for your Facebook page (and your websites).

Make sure you are using images that are relevant to the niche you are in. For example, a restaurant owner wouldn’t post images of women’s clothing, and a if you’re in the weight loss niche, you wouldn’t post images of candy or other junk foods. Instead, if you own a restaurant, share pictures of your Chef in action, or pictures of your waiters at a table of smiling guests.

Facebook was literally made for sharing, so break out your camera and start snapping away! Get candid photos, and also professional photos. Your pictures will help tell the world what your brand is, what you stand for, the personality  of your brand, and more. Have fun with it!

Use Native Video

Don’t just stop at photos, though! Every day, Facebook users view over 8 billion videos! Some are from sites like YouTube, some are Facebook live videos, and some are uploaded by other users. People are very entertained by video, and will engage with them almost 100% of the time.

YouTube may be the the largest video platform, but don’t make the mistake of only sharing links to YouTube videos. If you do this, you are going to miss out on a lot of potential viewers. A better idea is to create videos exclusively for Facebook and upload these natively to the platform.

Facebook will always give native videos a higher priority than links to external video platforms.
Facebook users like native videos as well as they do not have to leave the social network to view them.

Create square style videos especially for your Facebook posts. There are several online tools that will help you to do this. As most people use mobile devices to log in to Facebook, square videos just look a lot better in their news feeds.

Short Posts are better

Make your Facebook posts as short as you can. People don’t visit Facebook to read 1,000 word essays. Put those longer posts on your website, then make a Facebook post highlighting the main points. Link back to that post on your website. This will allow the user to click through and read the longer post if they’re interested.
