How To Get Free Traffic From Facebook Groups

An excellent source for free traffic generation is Facebook groups. In my last post, I talked about your own Facebook group, but today I am talking about other Facebook groups, not your own. In order to successfully tap into this excellent traffic source, you have to know what to do and what not to do. It doesn’t matter what niche you’re in, you will find an abundance of Facebook groups related to it. You can grow your own audience just by participating in these groups.

Identify The Right Groups

It is really easy to find groups that are related to your niche. All you have to do is use Facebook’s search function. You’ll first need to identify some keywords that best describe your niche. (If you need a good keyword research tool, I gave one away in my last post).

Let’s stick with the weight loss niche as an example. Some really good keywords to search for relevant Facebook groups are –

* Weight loss
* Burn fat
* Diets
* Nutrition
* Exercise
* Diet programs

You can drill down even further into sub-niches, too. Being laser targeted to your specific area of business is never a bad idea. What this means is instead of just “weight loss”, you search for “weight loss for women”, “weight loss for men over 50”, or “losing belly fat”. Make sure you do your homework, and come up with as many keywords as you can.

Find Active Groups

You don’t want  to join a Facebook group where nobody is posting or commenting. Joining a dead group like that is a waste of your time. Remember, we are trying to generate free traffic from these Facebook groups, not just increase the number of groups we’re in. You want to find groups that are active, and that have a lot of members. You may have to apply to join some of these groups just to see what’s going on in them.

Try to find between 5 and 10 groups that seem good, and join them. Avoid open groups, as they are very prone to spam and trolls. Closed groups are best. Once you are a member, check the group out and see how active it is.

Make sure that you have read the group rules. Some groups do not allow external links. Make sure that you will not be breaking the rules by sharing a link to your website, or by direct messaging other members with information. You want to be respectful, and not do things to get kicked out of any groups. You want to have a good reputation.

Provide Value In The Beginning

Once you have found some good groups, you’ll want to start being active in them. That doesn’t mean you jump right in and start posting your promotional messages. This goes right back to maintaining a good reputation. If you join a group and immediately start promoting your products and your websites, you are going to be labeled a spammer and kicked out of those groups. Instead, start by making a post introducing yourself. Let people know who you are, where you’re from, a little bit about your journey, and what you stand for. You can mention what you do, and mention your website, but just generally. Say something like “You can see more of my story on my Facebook page”. This will leave people wanting to see what you have to say, and they will check your page out. Obviously, you will want to have your Facebook page set up and ready for visitors, with content that links to your website.

There is a very good chance that a good number of existing group members will comment on your post welcoming you to the group. Some may even message you directly and have a friendly conversation to get to know you a little better. Make sure that you thank each of these people for their warm welcome by replying to their comments, and have the conversations in messenger. It is important for you to interact and build relationships with the members of the groups you joined, so that when you do finally talk about your business directly, they don’t block you and go about their day.

Check For Promo Days

Even though some groups may not seem like it, every group was started by a person or group of people who had a specific purpose in mind for their members. Unless the group was formed for others to promote themselves and their businesses, chances are there are limits to promotional posting in the group. Most groups have certain promo days, where they allow members to post openly about their businesses and share links to their websites. Since you have joined 5-10 groups, it is a good idea to use a calendar or a spreadsheet to keep track of which days you can post promos in each group. This will help you avoid any confusion that could result in you getting kicked out of a group. If that happens, all of your groundwork was for nothing.

Repurpose Your Existing Content

We have all heard the expression “Work smarter, not harder”. The best example of this for any internet marketer is repurposing content. I am a huge fan of repurposing content, especially the really good stuff. I bring this up because obviously you are going to need to post in the groups you joined on non-promo days, and you want to make sure that you’re posting content that provides value. Not only that, but your posts should also help position you as an authority in the eyes of other members. By using content that you have already published on your website, you are going to appear to be an expert of sorts to other members, especially those who are not online marketers themselves.

When members see posts with information that is well-researched, accurate, and laid out intelligently, they are going to take notice. This is because a lot of Facebook users tend to lean heavily on slang terms and throw things like grammar and punctuation to the side. But there are always going to be people who are sticklers for good grammar, proper English, and the use of punctuation, and they are going to appreciate seeing someone who pays attention to those areas. Even the people who forego those things on Facebook are going to appreciate them when they see them. And it will strengthen your position as an authority in your niche. When people see content that looks professional, they are going to want to know more about you, and will click through to your Facebook page.

Remember, you need to get people to know, like, and trust you. You also need to be seen as an authority in your niche. With just a little daily effort in a few Facebook groups, you will be well on your way to achieving these goals, and the free traffic will begin to flow. Then all you have to do is maintain the relationships you have already built, and rinse and repeat with a few new groups. Facebook groups are in endless supply, and so is the traffic you can get by utilizing them the right way.
